Getting Ready for #city23

When I saw @thedovetailor's suggestion for a #city23 variant approach to Sean McCoy's #dungeon23 project, I knew I wanted to work on a couple of different city projects in 2023, doing small amounts at a time, both supporting systems I've worked on and with (in addition to some other projects I've set out for this year). Both of these had been on my "maybe in 2023" list, but I think blogging through them rather than trying to get them complete and out first would ultimately be more fun and more likely to happen.

As I'm starting to get notes together and get ready for writing, I'm identifying topics that I might shift between, either focusing on specific topics from month to month or shifting between them to keep myself fresh.

Lunaris, Maine

Just off Highway 6 between the Cananeus National Forest and the beaches and marinas of Geist Bay, the little city of Lunaris is best known for the picturesque Christiana Lighthouse. Once a thriving fishery, the town, the recipient of several federal grants, is struggling to establish itself as a tourist center. During 2023, I'm planning to work on a few of the following sections.

Factions

  • The Lunaris Grove (a wealthy cult with a compound in the woods and connections throughout the region)
  • The Cananeus Benevolent Society (secret society covering for the existence of werewolves)
  • The Geist Bay Research Foundation (a private but government-funded occult research center)
  • Lunaris Tourism Board (city center businesses)

Locations

Spots in the town center
Locations off Highway 6
What you find in the woods
What you find offshore

Dooms

  • The Grove's Great Rite
  • The War of the Wolves
  • The Foundation's Awakening Project

People

Focusing on people in town who aren't clearly/cleanly aligned with the dominant factions.

  • People with a grudge
  • People with places to stay (or hide)
  • People who've got a reason to help
  • People with something to sell (information brokers, shopkeepers, mercenaries)

Nottingham

In Nottingham, factions and locations are much more tightly intertwined, with the Sheriff and the Prior having specific spaces they control (the castle and the priory), so I'm not breaking them down into distinct categories here.

For Nottingham, I'm likely to spend more than a month on each topic. If stats come up, I'm planning to provide them for common OSR systems and my own game Sherwood.

Factions & Locations

  • Nottingham Castle (riffing on the actual royal castle)
  • St. Martin's Priory (using the historical Cluniac Lenton Priory as a basis)
  • Streets and Markets
  • The Blue Boar (fictional inn near Nottingham created by Howard Pyle for his Merry Adventures of Robin Hood)
  • The shire (monuments, castles, and villages in the vicinity)

Dooms

  • Royal Favorites & Shifting Allegiances
  • Forest King's Curse
  • The old catacombs

People

I'm hoping to spend some time on "People" using categories much like those above for Lunaris:People with a grudge

  • People with places to stay (or hide)
  • People who've got a reason to help
  • People with something to sell (information brokers, shopkeepers, mercenaries)
